In forty plus years of filmmaking, Shaw Brothers auteur Li Han Hsiang left an indelible stamp on Hong Kong cinema with his elegant period pieces and artistic erotica. He forged a new aesthetic with his lush tales of raw emotions and lustful romance, like Golden Lotus (1974), Sensual Pleasures (1978), and the 1977 period erotic anthology Moods of Love. One of Li’s representative works, the film features the director’s trademark luscious photography and four of the biggest softcore starlets of the 1970s, namely Tien Ni, Shirley Yu, Siu Yam Yam (Susan Shaw), and Chen Ping.
Like Li’s later Return of the Dead (1979), Moods of Love interweaves themes of vengeance and karmic retribution in two sultry tales of fatal seduction. The first story revolves around a highly ed monk, Yu Tong (Shaw Brothers star Ngok Wah), who succumbs to the sexy wiles of a courtesan (Shirley Yu). In the second story, a woman (Siu Yam Yam) of the brothel seeks revenge for her mother’s (Chen Ping) death.
